London bicycle messenger run over by left turning HGV - again! · 11.03.05
In the week of the anniversary of the death of Sebastian Lukomski, London bicycle messenger Larry Zeleznik was run over by left-turning HGV.
According to Larry the HGV wasn't signalling. The accident happened on Monday 21st Feb, a little too close to the anniversary of Seb's death for comfort, at the roundabout on Greenwich Road junction with Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach.
Larry is ok, but has lost of lot of skin off his foot. The medical term for this is 'degloved'. He tore off skin and flesh pulling his foot out from under the HGV wheel. “It was either that or be turned into 'bike-pizza' by the rear wheels”, he told Rolling News.
Amazingly, none of his bones have been broken, though he says that in a way the soft tissue damage is so bad that a simple fracture might be preferable. He has had several operations to try to restore the sub-epidermis (the fatty layer under the skin) and the epidermis (skin). Ouch!
Larry will not be able to work for a while, and has applied for, and received a payment from the Bicycle Messenger Emergency Fund. Larry is the second London bicycle messenger to have received assistance from the BMEF. The BMEF works! Click here to make a donation.
