  2. Deirdre Mullins, 27.75
  3. Scarlet Hughes, 28.49

We seeded the top 8 from Rollapaluza II, to make qualifying less frantic. Note that Craig Nasty was 4 seconds slower than the slowest female, although he will claim mechanical difficulties.

Male Round 1

Seeds 1 & 2, Mullet King Adam and Jon Chang, Bicycle Messenger Express were given byes to the second round. Clem and Steve Russell didn’t do qualifying and so were put in the last two qualification spots. Stevie took the opportunity to get himself a dead heat with Joe Fletcher, and had to be coaxed back onto the bike. One of the seeds, Dom the Retford Rolla, didn’t show, so Dean got a bye. Lucky Dean, but this meant that the top of the draw was opening up invitingly for Kaspar, who had beaten Billy pretty comfortably. Bill made a meal of beating Dave Corrigan and supplied the 2nd dead heat of the night, but squeezed past in the 250 ride off.

Male Round 2

The top 2 seeds rode for the first time, Adam winning easily, but Chang sensationally knocked out amid accusations of mechanical impediment. Chang was still muttering into his rollup when another seed, Bingo was knocked out. Joe Fletcher’s win was tainted by accusations of incompetence against the equipment, with dark threats being issued to the officials if the result of Crashmaster K’s race with Andy White did not go the right way. Fortunately it did.

Male Quarter Final

Male Semi finals 1000m

To make the finals more interesting, the semis and finals were run over 1000m, or two laps of the clock. The first semi was a tactical affair, Adam & Joe seeking to hide their true strength for the first 500m and only going all out in the last 350m. When Adam finally applied the pressure, he easily opened up a gap. The second was a much more exciting affair, with a very partisan crowd inflamed by see-saw contest which was joined from the shout ‘go’. Kaspar joined Adam in the final, with Adam still very much the favourite. In the limited female field, Catt beat Scarlet for the chance to meet Crissi in the final.

Female 3rd place ride off

Finals

Catt put up game resistance, but Crissi was never headed.
So now the male final. Of all the races we have had in all the Roller Race competitions in London since our very first London messenger roller race in 2000, I have not seen a more exciting race than our male final, or a more acclaimed winner than Kaspar. Naturally, all the unattached spectators swung behind the underdog, Kaspar. At the finish there was pandemonium. Thanks to Adam for helping put on such a fabulous finale to the night’s entertainment. Rollapaluza III really did turn out to be the Revenge of the Muppet!
